August 2022 Club Newsletter

General Manager’s Update

Since June, we have expanded our Weekly Newsletter to cover both our Men and Women Competitions, with added news on things happening about the Club. Because of this we will produce our Club Newsletter quarterly, covering in more detail things of interest to Members.

The Club is in good stead despite us dealing with the joys on on-going Covid, an aggressive flu strain and the weather of course. Over the recent months, we have kept you up to date on the Capital Projects about the Club. In particular the refurbishment of the Clubhouse and the work being done to improve the course. All and more are covered in this newsletter.

Looking at a Bigger Picture, it has been interesting getting information from Golf NZ on how much our sport counts in the participation stakes across NZ. The perception golf is played by older, white males is very much not the case. In fact, golf’s reach across genders, ages and races is huge – as the information from Golf NZ below affirms. This information was collated for the Auckland City Council, who own most club course land and are questioning their ongoing support.

Active New Zealand Survey (2019) undertaken by Sport New Zealand highlights golf as one of the most popular sport and recreation activities for adults. In Auckland, 10% participated in golf in the last 12 months. For context, compare this participation to football (7%), netball (5%), cricket (4%) hockey (2%) and rugby (2%).

  • The research also highlights that Golf is one of the most popular sport and recreation activities for males and females. For context:
    • 17% of males have played golf in the last 12 months

Male participation across other sports, football (10%), tennis (9%), cricket (7%) and rugby (4%)

    • 5% of females have played golf in the last 12 months

Female participation across other sports, netball (8%), tennis (7%), football (4%), cricket (2%) and rugby (1%).

  • Golf connects participants from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds to be active. For context, this table highlights sport participation in the last 12 months by ethnicity.

Refurbishing our Clubhouse

and joinery. There is still” tidy up” to do, with a feature inset in the entrance, upgrading some of the lighting and completing the hanging our photos and paintings. To be considered at a Stage 2 will be the furniture and entrance door.

The Club is hugely indebted to member Peter Knight who effectively project managed the refurbishment from the initial designs through to coordinating all the tradesmen on site. His hospitality expertise and club knowledge really has made it all work.

Another team that has excelled has been Sue Orpwood and John Barnes who have catalogued all our photos and paintings and sorted the best for hanging in our changing rooms, our hallway gallery and in the Committee Room.

Work out on the Course

The last few weeks have been a matter of dealing with what Mother Nature has thrown at us. In July we have had the highest rainfall on record, so managing play on the course has been essential. Ricky and his team have made sure our drains are working while also making sure the course is presented to a high standard for members and visitors alike.

We are planning more investment into the course, with some work such as the removal of shading trees and returfing of tees on Holes 14 and 15 completed.

New Sponsor – New Ball Washer

We are pleased to welcome as a sponsor partner current member Jonathon Curragh from Bayleys, who is supporting the replacement and refurbishment of our ball washers.

Member Malcolm Davis asked if he could undertake the project to improve not only the condition of our ball washers but also to make sure they are located at appropriate holes to provide cover for both our men and women tees. We are using a donation from Canterbury Veterans Golfers plus Jonathon’s support to meet the cost. Again, another improvement to reflect the quality of our Club and course.

News from the Café

With a very topsy-turvy month weather-wise, we have had challenges delivering from the Café. The course closures and short days have meant we cannot always have all items available however we try to provide the best we can. Our soup offerings have ben extremely popular and will stay on our menu until warmer months arrive.

Members should be aware we can provide pies, sausage rolls and bespoke meals for you to have at home.

A big thank you to Dave (our handyman) for making a cover for our herb garden – keeps the pests away.

Please keep well and many thanks for your ongoing support.
